Toronto

Toronto is Canada's largest city and stands on the shores of the Great Lakes. Probably its most famous building is the soaring CN Tower, named after the Canadian National railway company which built it in 1973 and was until 2007 the world's tallest freestanding structure. Toronto is a thoroughly modern city but looks back on a long history - a British colonial fort still stands in the city centre, while settlement goes as far back as French traders in the 1750s. Elsewhere in the city, you can visit the 19th century whisky distillery which was once the world's largest and is now a heritage area. The famous Niagara falls are an easy day-trip away from the city by train, while sports fans may be interested in the Ice Hockey Hall of Fame.
