The Hague

Amsterdam may be the capital of the Netherlands and the heart of its business and cultural scenes, but The Hague is its seat of Government, where the Parliament meets and the Royal Family live. It has also become known as "the World's Courthouse" thanks to the various international courts that are based here, most famously the International Court of Justice. The city was originally founded around a hunting lodge and the city is still a very green one, with many leafy parks and wide avenues framing the monumental public buildings and palaces. The seaside resorts of Scheveningen and Kijkduin, now part of the city, offer 11km of sandy beaches, while the city is also reputed to be the best place to eat the spicy Indonesian cuisine introduced to the Netherlands from its former colony.
