Switzerland

Surrounded by the mountains which make up 60% of its terrain and a veritable melting pot of languages (four different mother tongues, with English spoken widely), Switzerland offers awe-inspiring views, story-book scenery and transport links of unrivalled efficiency. From our chosen destinations, there is a breathtaking array of possible excursions on local trams, trains and cable-cars. You can choose to be as active as you like, enjoying some fine summer walking in flower-filled meadows or you may prefer to relax and simply admire the breathtaking scenery. Travellers over the centuries have marvelled at mountains such as the Matterhorn and the Eiger, and there is an indisputable romance to be surrounded by such peaks.

Switzerland has such a huge variety of places to stay and things to see and do that we can't hope to feature them all - here are just a few more ideas for you.

Chur - Set in a beautiful valley in the heart of the southeastern Graubünden region, Chur (pronounced Koor) is a delightful medieval city in its own right and a great base for exploring this fascinating region, as well as being a stop on the Glacier Express route.

Zermatt - The famous resort of Zermatt, clustered beneath the triangular Matterhorn, is a car-free paradise with many cable cars and funicular railways heading into the mountains surrounding it, and is the western Terminus of the Glacier Express.

Basel - This fascinating city, straddling the Swiss Border with France and Germany on the river Rhine, is often just somewhere to change trains but rewards a few days' exploration of its narrow cobbled streets, majestic cathedral and gorgeous town hall.

Rail Journeys

Switzerland is famous for its mountain railways and it is not much of an exaggeration to say that almost any train you take in Switzerland will be travelling along a scenic stretch of line. Here are some of the most famous, for more you can click here to be taken to the section of our website dedicated to scenic rail journeys.

Glacier Express - probably the best known of all the Swiss rail journeys, the "Slowest Express in the World" links Zermatt in the southwest of the country with St. Moritz in the southeast, travelling via Brig and Chur, through Andermatt and along the valleys of two young rivers - the Rhône and the Rhine.

Bernina Express - not as well-known as the Glacier Express but frequently described by our customers as a more spectacular journey, the Bernina Express links Chur with Tirano, just over the border in Italy, via the Albula and Bernina Passes, across some of the most remote spots in Switzerland.

Golden Pass - Linking the three lakeside resorts of Montreux, Interlaken and Lucerne, the Golden Pass route is another unsung hero of Swiss rail. With frequent local trains alongside the panoramic Golden Panoramic Express services, you can break up the journey with time in Interlaken if you wish.
