New York
New York. The Big Apple. The City So Nice They Named It Twice. Gotham. The City That Never Sleeps. A city with almost as many nicknames as inhabitants, New York has been an ethnic melting-pot almost since its first foundation, when the Dutch colonists mingled with the native Lenape, followed by the English and by the 19th century immigrants were flooding in from all over the world. Most famously, New York is home to sizeable Italian and Jewish communities, but one of the glories of the city is the way in which almost every nation, tribe and language on Earth is represented here. Visitors are either enchanted and dazzled or driven almost to distraction by the frenetic pace of life in New York, but it is impossible to be ambivalent about this, one of the world's most important cities.
