Madrid

Cosmopolitan Madrid has been the capital of Spain since the 16th century and possesses an almost unparalleled artistic and cultural heritage. Set on a mountain plateau in the centre of Spain, the city is Europe's highest capital and also one of the continent's greenest cities, with an increasing number of parks creating an idyllic contrast with Madrid's modern infrastructure. Along with its colourful and lively contemporary features, including truly cosmopolitan cuisine and a breathtaking array of shopping opportunities from high street chains to designer boutiques, Madrid is also a very grand city, boasting austere palaces, ornate churches and enormous private houses and museums. The compact old town of Madrid is crammed with monuments, cultural institutions and galleries and offers an significant insight into the city's history and culture.
