Dresden
After the destruction of 1945, the "Florence of the Elbe" was restored painstakingly by the East German authorities. Some of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Germany may be found in Dresden, including the magnificent Zwinger Palace, the Semper Opera House and the Frauenkirche, which was left in ruins as a war memorial and only restored in the 1990s to commemmorate German reunification. Outside the historic centre, meanwhile, some fascinating examples of communist-era "Socialist-realist" architecture may be found.
