Denmark

The Danes have a word - hygge - meaning a sort of instant cosy friendliness which characterises so much of this charming country. Although over a quarter of Denmark's population live in the capital, Copenhagen, the city still exudes the kind of relaxed charm that other capitals only dream of. Outside Copenhagen, the rolling countryside is scattered with tranquil villages and old towns untouched by the ravages of war. Denmark is a fascinating mix of the Scandinavian seafaring tradition with the open, pastoral landscapes of northern Germany which creates a unique identity. Denmark also prides itself on being at the cutting edge of architecture, design and technology and Copenhagen is rich in stunning modern buildings to complement its grand old palaces

Copenhagen is the most popular tourist destination in Denmark, but there is plenty more to see and do in this cosy little country. Here are some more ideas.

Aalborg - An unassuming university town, Aalborg is a laid-back place famous for its cafes and nightlife as much as for its ancient sites and historic buildings.

Odense - Hans Christian Andersen's home town is a little treasure-trove of great attractions and museums, within easy striking distance of much of Denmark.
