Avignon
Situated on the left bank of the Rhône River, Avignon is known as a city of two halves - the city of history and the city of theatre. Enter through any of the seven gateways of the preserved ramparts that surround the city to discover its appeal. The Palais des Papes remains the most dominant feature of the city. Built in 1309 to defend against rogue bands of mercenaries, the Palais was the former residence of each of the city's seven Popes. The town of Avignon is a labyrinth of ancient streets and courtyards waiting to be explored - the Rue Joseph-Venet and Rue de Roi-René are lined with 16th and 17th century houses, museums and notable churches. Every summer, the city plays host to the Avignon theatre festival. Artists gather from around the world to entertain spectators with ballet, drama and classical concerts and late in the evening when the shows are over, the café and restaurant terraces fill up with actors and spectators alike, creating a unique atmosphere found only in Avignon in the summer.
