Barszcz soup

Poland

Poland has undoubtedly had a troubled and divided history that has been profoundly affected by the Second World War and its aftermath. However, despite these influences, the country still maintains a distinct sense of culture, community and tradition. Poland is also known for its diverse landscapes, from the golden sands of the Baltic coast in the north to the Tatras Mountains and highlands of Zakopane in the south. Polish cuisine is extremely varied and localised, with particular dishes taking inspiration from many of the country’s Baltic neighbours. Specialities include Barszcz (a spicy beetroot broth), Bigos (fried dumplings with stewed cabbage and meat) and Pierogi (dumplings filled with cottage cheese and potatoes). Yet Poland is probably most renowned for its vodka. Served neat and chilled, this is perhaps the best way to gain a true taste of Poland, but when sampling this speciality, do not forget to wish your fellow drinkers “Na Zdrowie”!
