The Czech Republic |
The Czech Republic lies at the very heart of central Europe and as such, has always been at the crossroads of European cultures. The Republic is one of the youngest European countries, created in 1993, when the Czechoslovak Federal Republic split into two independent states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Larger scale tourism in the Czech Republic really dates from the 1989 Velvet Revolution when a series of mass demonstrations and strikes resulted in the overthrow of the hardline Communist leadership. Until recently, visitors to this fascinating country have largely focused their attentions on Prague, with its architectural glories, magnificent castle and network of charming cobbled streets. Many fascinating day trips are possible from Prague, including the city of Kutná Hora with its curious ossuary, and Plzen, famed for its brewery and Pilsner beer. | The Czech Flag |
