Denmark

The Danes have a word – hygge – meaning a sort of instant cosy friendliness which characterises so much of this charming country. Although over a quarter of Denmark’s population live in the capital, Copenhagen, the city still exudes the kind of relaxed charm that other capitals only dream of. Outside Copenhagen, the rolling countryside is scattered with tranquil villages and old towns untouched by the ravages of war. Denmark is a fascinating mix of the Scandinavian seafaring tradition with the open, pastoral landscapes of northern Germany which creates a unique identity. Denmark also prides itself on being at the cutting edge of architecture, design and technology and Copenhagen is rich in stunning modern buildings to complement its grand old palaces, while names like Georg Jensen for silverware and Royal Copenhagen for porcelain are still among the most sought-after designers.
